Structural Response Vector-A Possible New Method for Structure Damage Identification

In recent years, many structural damage identification methods based on structural response (including static or dynamic response) were developed in the world. Anyhow the main difficulty of the methods is the poor sensitivity of the damage parameters to the different kinds of damages. To overcome the difficulty, we proposed a new method-structural response vector (SRV) to depict the damage response, which was based on the bridge routine examination data. The SRV is defined as a vector with normalized elements of some static strains in a bridge and several natural frequencies. These elements are the regular measurement elements in routine examination. In order to verify the possibility of using the SRV to identify the damages of a bridge, the simple 2D model of a bridge was set up. In the model, the different kind of damages (with given location and length) was set in the beam, then a direct analysis was made to calculate the SRVs of the beam with different damages. The results show that there are obvious changes of SRVs of the beam with different damages; it means that the SRV is a possible new method for structural damage identification.
