Aspects considering the evaluation of urban risk. Case study - Timisoara (Romania)

The concept of risk is at the moment one of the most debated issues for the academic environment and the social economic actors and, at the same time, one of the most important scientific categories having a generalizing feature similar to philosophical concepts. Geography subscribes the risk to the analysis of the dynamics of territorial systems and underlines both its positive and negative features. Among human systems, cities are most exposed to the occurrence of risks due to the high density of population, infrastructures and goods, and also due to urban evolution and difficult management. The analysis of all these categories, i.e. of integrated risk, represents a most useful tool for responsible local authorities to ensure high performance and sustainable management. The paper aims to analyze the risk theory, especially urban risk, and offers as a case study a Romanian city in the post-communist period. The analysis includes the outline of the premises of risk, the identification of the main areas and categories of risk, the evaluation of road risk, and the perception of risk by the population.
