Study of Heat Treated Large Hot Rolled Steel Rings

The thermal cycles during heat treatment of steel rings made of medium carbon steel were recorded by the insertion of type K thermocouples. The rings were reheated following a multi-stage cycle that allowed for a homogeneous distribution of temperature before normalizing and quenching. The temperatures recorded by these devices were used to evaluate the critical points during transformation by thermal analyses and a continuous cooling transformation diagram was constructed. Hardness values measured on quenched rings are compared with those predicted by a commercial software used to predict the behaviour of the steel during quenching.
