We have developed very small direct methanol fuel cell stack for mobile devices. The stack was designed with the total size of 48 mm × 50 mm × 17 mm (volume: ~ 40.8 cc) and it consisted of 6 cells and each cell has an active area of 13.7 cm~2. The maximum power output of the stack is 7.63W (1.81V @ 4.22A) and the nominal power output of the stack was 5.49W (2.4V @ 2.29A) at 2.4V (0.4 V/cell). In this work, we studied starting characteristics of 5W class small DMFC stack and effects of methanol/air stoichiometry on the stack performance at constant current.
