Two approaches to automation of a process of calculating metamaterial parameters according to the scattering-parameter extraction method using the modern full-wave simulators are presented and discussed. First approach proposes calculating the effective material parameters of a metamaterial inside Ansys HFSS simulator using an output variables feature in a postprocessing stage, thus an analysis or optimization could be realized as a self-contained algorithm inside the simulation software. Second approach proposes the usage of a MATLAB script written for launching and controlling CST Microwave Studio simulator and calculating the metamaterial parameters directly from MATLAB. This advanced approach realizes a self-contained designing procedure inside the powerful mathematical software. Presented report should help the researchers and engineers to perform analyses and optimization of effective material parameters of metamaterial structures in a more flexible and less time-consuming way.
