COMPUTER BASED UNIVERSITY LABORATORY SUPPORTING AUTOMATED PLANT MANAGEMENT

The University of Houston at Clear Lake City has developed a computer based process control laboratory to support realistic hands-on experience for its students. This paper presents the laboratory configuration and capabilities to support the Process Monitoring and Control discipline (analogous to the Instrumentation and Control Engineering curriculum recommended by ISA). Classroom demonstrations include process modeling, simulation, and control. Facilities are now available for research and development of computer based automated plant management. The university will be applying state of the art software and hardware systems to implement proof of principle techniques using the Ada Programming Support Environment on the Intel iAPX-432 micromainframe.
