Modulated thermogravimetry (MTGA~(TM)) has proven to be a useful tool for the determination of kinetic parameters of decomposition and volatilization reactions. Modulated temperature techniques, like MTGA, make use of somewhat different experimental conditions than those of the traditional techniques upon which they are based. The systematic variation of one or more experimental parameters (i.e., ruggedness testing) to observe the effect, is useful in determining appropriate operating conditions. Modulation amplitude, period, form of the underlying temperature program (i.e., linear heating, quasi-isothermal operation or variable heating rate conditions), purge gas type and underlying heating rate were tested. This results in a recommended set(s) of "optimized" experimental parameters which produce reliable results in the shortest period of time.
