Compositional analysis of gasket materials by thermal and spectroscopic methods

The basic composition of fibers, polymers, carbon black and ash in different types of gasket materials was determined by DSC, TG and FTIR. Soxhlet extraction removed the solvent-soluble portion of the crosslinked copolymer binder. The monomer ratios of the dried extracts determined from the FTIR spectra agreed with those calculated from the glass transition temperature (Tg). TG and DTG provided identification and quantitative estimates of the major components in the gaskets. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis of the ash yielded additional information on the other components of the gaskets.
