Modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (MTDSC) is an ingenious modification to linear temperature DSC (LTDSC) that has slowly but surely established a role as a valuable interrogation tool in the thermal analysis of coatings. Coatings are usually a mixture of many different polymers that play a variety of roles in the manufacture, application and the ultimate physical properties of the dried film. Because of the complexity of today's coatings, the total heat flow from a linear temperature DSC run often contains a large variety of thermal events that are difficult to separate. A modulated temperature DSC run, however, provides a window on the heat capacity of the polymer that is unavailable in a linear temperature DSC run. In this paper, a brief overview of the MTDSC technique will be followed by a few examples which demonstrate the advantage of MTDSC over LTDSC when analyzing coatings.
