Dynamic Responses of Float-over Barge Subjected to Random Waves

The installation of topsides onto fixed structures such as jacket by thernfloat-over method has been widely utilized in offshore constructionrnindustry. This technique demonstrates significant advantages over thernconventional lifting installation especially in remote areas where heavyrnlifting crane barges are unavailable and topside weight exceeds thernlifting capacity of the floating crane. In order to ensure smooth floatoverrnoperations, the responses of the float-over barge due to waves arerncrucial and must be determined. In this paper, the experimental resultsrnon the scale model of float-over barge are presented, analyzed andrncompared with those from theoretical analysis using developedrncomputer programs and simplified approach using frequency domainrndynamic analysis. The model tests were conducted on a modelrnfollowing Froude scaling law with geometric scale of 1:50. Randomrnwave sea states were specified for the test and the results are presentedrnin terms of Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs). The model testsrnwere conducted in a wave basin with simulated ocean environmentrnunder random waves and the dynamic responses in terms of motions ofrnthe barge were monitored during the tests. The test results wererncompared with theoretical values obtained from analysis andrnconclusions arrived at. Overall results show satisfactory agreementrnbetween model tests and theoretical analysis.
