For maintaining biological diversity in the coral coasts around RyukyurnIslands, Japan, a role played by the adjacent Kuroshio warm current isrnanticipated to be necessary for larval and nutrient transport. In order tornunderstand dynamics and mixing between Kuroshio and the islands, werndevelop a detailed ocean downscaling model around Ryukyu Islands inrna doubly nested configuration using ROMS at horizontal resolutionsrndown to 1km, forced by the assimilative JCOPE2 and JMAGSM/rnMSM. The model successfully reproduces anticyclonic eddiesrnthat are significantly retained on the western side of the islands tornpromote lateral mixing in the area.
