This work describes the development of an analytical protocol for analysing various industrial chemicals which may be used directly or involved in terrorist attack episodes or industrial accidents. The concept is based on a simplified sample extraction procedure, followed by gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) analysis which can be implemented on site or in a mobile laboratory. Two commercially available pesticides, Malathion and Diazinon were chosen as model chemicals and spiked onto a variety of matrices. Soil sample was extracted by mechanical shaking with solvent in a disposable vial. Water sample was extracted by conventional liquid partitioning and the raw extract analysed without any concentration. This was compared with the Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME), which provides a significant improvement in sensitivity down to the low ppb-level. Air sample was collected from a heated vapour generator by a sampling train consisting of glass fibre filter and glass wool packed tubes. After collection, each component of the sample train was examined to assess the distribution of vapour deposition. Despite the simplified sample workup, none of the sample types pose any analytical problem. The GC/MS provides rapid and unequivocal analysis of the raw extract due to the high resolution of capillary column combined with the uniqueness of mass spectrum. This work provides a blueprint from which many chemicals of industrial or environmental interest can be examined using only basic laboratory equipment and supplies.
