In comparison with their onshore counterparts, offshore wind farms andrntheir life cycle operations provide a number of different aspects tornconsider. Nowadays, different technological solutions are being testedrnfor the design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance ofrnoffshore wind farms. Still the challenges are quite diverse and mostlyrnrelate to: design of electrical infrastructure; structural design andrnmaterial choice for aggressive environmental and seasonal conditions;rnsite assessment and optimal set-up; substructures; installation methods;rnlogistics; technical service access; operations and maintenance, etc.rnFirstly this paper reviews the technical and physical aspects of thernmechanical, electrical, and structural subsystems and their criticalrnfailure scenarios as a stand point for assessing the current technologicalrnsolutions and industrial applications. The second part of the paperrnattempts to map the status quo within offshore wind industries andrnassess the current status with respect to expected optimum performancerncriteria. It critically reviews, in particular, the technical and operationalrnintegrity concepts which have some influence from systems designrnprocess, cost-optimal maintenance approaches, and supportiverndecision-making applications, intelligent remote diagnosticsrnprognostics techniques and their feasibility, etc. Thus this paperrncontributes in many different ways, bringing a multi-disciplinaryrnperspective, and leading the way toward further research and industrialrnapplications from an integrated asset management point of view.
