BUSINESS-LEVEL STRATEGY, STRUCTURE, AND TECHNOLOGY FIT

We draw on established thinking in the complementary fields of organization theory and strategicrnmanagement to develop a business-level model explaining why fit among a firm's strategy, structure,rnand technology is a prerequisite for superior performance. We argue that a low-cost strategy improvesrnperformance when coupled with routine technology and the centralization, formalization, andrnspecialization that are characteristic of mechanistic structures. In contrast, differentiation improvesrnperformance when coupled with non-routine technology and a flexible, organic structure with therncharacteristics of low centralization, low formalization, and low specialization. Sustaining superiorrnperformance requires that fit be managed as covariation.
