Application of bio-methenated distillery effluent (BMDE), bio-compost and FYM as a source of plant nutrients and their effect on soil properties, nutrient uptake, juice quality and sugarcane yield was conducted at Sugarcane Research Institute, Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar. The treatments consisted of substitution of K_2O @ O, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the recommended dose (150 m~3/ha) through BMDE along with bio-compost and FYM @ 20t/ha with recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer. The cane yield significantly increased due to application of BMDE, bio-compost and FYM over control. The uptake of nutrient, viz., N, P and K followed the similar trend as cane yield. The highest cane yield was recorded where 100% K_2O replacement through BMDE (76.23 t/ha) and lowest in control (61.22 t/ha). The qualities of juice, viz., sucrose and purity per cent remain unaffected. Commercial Cane Sugar significantly increased in all the treatments over control. The organic carbon and available N, P_2O_5 and K_2O content of the post harvest soils increased due to increasing levels of BMDE and bio-compost. It is important to note that K content of post harvest soil increased substantially in BMDE treated plots indicated that application of BMDE may be beneficial for enriching the native nutrient status of soil and can be used as an alternative source of K-fertilizer.
