A CFD model has been developed for analysis of close proximity underwater explosions to non-responding and responding targets, i.e. the bubble jet problem. An explicit Godunov algorithm is adopted for solution of the Euler equations, and a multiple material model assuming mixed properties and pressure equilibrium is used to simulate the interaction between detonation products and water. Hydrostatic pressure and free surface effects are also considered in the CFD model. Calculations performed on a DRDC Suffield experimental setup shows that the new model is capable of capturing all of the relevant physical phenomena, particularly the large impulse and velocity of the water jet, and the load reducing characteristics of plate motion induced cavitation.
