We suggest a new instrumented indentation technique for estimatingrnresidual stress of weldment. This technique is based on the keyrnconcepts that the deviatoric stress part of residual stress affects thernchange in indentation load-depth curve, and then by analyzingrndifference between residual stress-induced indentation curve andrnresidual stress-free curve, quantitative residual stress of target regionrncan be evaluated. To verify the applicability of the suggested technique,rnindentation tests and conventional tests were performed on weldment ofrnnatural gas pipeline. The estimated residual stress values obtained fromrnthe indentation technique showed good agreement with those fromrnconventional tests.
