This study presents validation of ozone data fromrnthe Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmo-rnspheric Sounding (MIPAS) onboard the Environ-rnmental Satellite (Envisat). Our approach utilizes anrnonline Ozone Data Assimilation System (ODAS) de-rnveloped at NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimila-rntion Office (GMAO). We added assimilation of MI-rnPAS ozone data to this system that already usesrnSolar Backscattered Ultraviolet/2 (SBUV/2) ozonerndata. Impacts of including MIPAS data in the ODASrnare evaluated against independent observations fromrnsatellite-borne occultation instruments. We showrnthat stratospheric impacts of MIPAS data are gener-rnally positive during the period covered (from Septem-rnber to November 2002). Both the superior verticalrnresolution and the additional night time coverage ofrnMIPAS relative to SBUV bring the largest improve-rnments in the analyses. The improvements are seenrnin the lower stratosphere in the northern high lat-rnitudes, with a substantially improved mean profilernshape. Comparisons of MIPAS analyzed ozone withrnindependent measurements reveal that the analysisrnoverestimates the ozone values between 100 hPa andrn70 hPa in the southern high latitudes.
