On Fretting Fatigue Damage Parameters

Fretting Fatigue (FF) is a well known phenomenon arising at contacts under relative oscillatory motion, which has been discovered originally in the grips of fatigue machines, but has been mainly studied in the context of critical aeronautical applications such as joints of gas turbine engines. In this paper, two important sets of FF experiments from the literature are considered (one from Nowell's DPhil experiments in Oxford in late '80s, and another from recent experiments of Prof. Farris' group in Purdue Univ.). FF life parameters corresponding to these experiments are calculated, namely maximum tangential microslip, maximum specific frictional energy dissipated, hybrid Ruiz's parameter. We conclude that despite there is no fundamental and rigorous basis for these parameters, they (above all the last two) seem correlated as suggested originally by Nowell and Hills, with FF life, or at least they appear so also for the Farris' experiments.
