A numerical model of solidification, cooling and heating has been outlined and its universality at operating use has been suggested. For comparison purposes, two non-traditional insulating materials were used.Computational analysis of thermal insulations of a cylindrcal riser used for common steel casting was performed. It is documented that one of these materials has conspicuously better insulating properties. The time of solidification of the riser at the same thickness of a shaped piece will be prolonged or for achieving the same insulating effect the smaller wall thickness can be used.It is shown that the thickness of the insulator wall can be optimized by this numerical approach.
