We studied the effect of modal-chromatic dispersion interaction on inter-symbol interference and mode partition noise in VCSEL based multimode channels and theoretically evaluated optical and electronic dispersion schemes. We compared fibers with the same magnitude of variation in radial mode group velocities, but with opposite sign. Modeled and experimental results show that fibers where the group velocities of high-order modes are faster than low-order modes can have improved performance in both equalized and unequalized channels.
