There are various polyimides that can be utilized as a coating on optical fiber for applications where the temperature can be expected to reach from 150℃ to 300℃. Since the target use is high temperature fiber, the thermal stability of a polyimide is critical. Also, the material is applied from solution as a thin layer, so the toughness and adhesion to glass are important characteristics to protect the fiber from mechanical damage. This paper presents a new polyimide coating system demonstrating superior thermal stability and a very high degree of toughness and adhesion to glass.
