Porous materials are well known to be used technically as catalysts, catalyst supports, and shape/size selective adsorbents owing to their characteristic geometries, large pore diameters and high surface areas. According to the definition of IUPAC, porous materials can be divided into three types in accordance with pore diameter: microporous (< 2 nm), mesoporous (2-50 nm) and macroporous (> 50 nm).
