The training of healthcare staff is an important aspectrnin reducing adverse events related to medical devices. Forrnmedical devices, e-learning has been shown to be arnsuccessful method for knowledge acquisition (e.g.,rnGrundgeiger et al, 2016). However, research addressed thernlearning of clinical skills to a lesser extent. Hands-onrnlearning seems to be superior to conventional classroomrnlearning when it comes to long-term-memory performancern(e.g., Hearns, Miller, & Nelson, 2010). This study examinedrnwhether using a syringe pump while learning improves thernskills to operate the pump, subjective confidence when usingrnthe pump, and knowledge about the pump compared to arntraining without the pump.rnWe tested two groups of nursing students. One grouprnreceived training with an e-learning module and a syringernpump for hands-on practice (e-learning + pump, n = 25),rnwhereas the other group used the e-learning module only (elearningrnonly, n = 26). In the first session, the participantsrnwere asked to conduct a 35-minute training session,rnfollowed by a questionnaire, a knowledge test, and a skillsrntest. In a follow-up session, the tests were repeated but thesernresults are not part of this abstract. Ethical approval wasrnobtained from the local ethics committee and thernparticipants gave their informed consent.
