The genus Emericella was established by Berkeley and Brown in 1857, and usually known as members of the Aspergillus nidulans group. In 1965, raper and Fennell accepted 11 species and 5 varieties in this group. Emericela is characterized by reddish brown to nearly dark colored, globose, non-ostiolate ascomata, globose to ovoid asci and reddish brwon to purple or blue, lenticular ascospores with two or more equatorial creasts. Ascospore ornamentation is easily observed by SEM. Its anamorphic characters are columnar, dark green to dark greenish gray conidial heads, conidiophores with a flsk shaped vesicle, biseriate aspergilla, and globose or ellipsoidal conidia.
