The species of Aspergillus section Flavi are important fungi for public health, food fermentation and food hygiene. Traditional identification of the species is based on the morphological characters. But the similarities in the morphology make identification difficult. Therefore, mycologists have been attempting to evaluate other criteria for classifying and identifying these fungi rapidly and reliably. Such analytical criterial as enzyme patterns, ubiquinone systems and DNA complementary have been used to the identification and classification of the section. But these studies did not answer the questions of taxonomy clearly. Mitochondrial (mt) DNA can give a magnified view of the genetic differences among species. Therefore, we studied the phylogenetic relationship of section Flavi based on mt cytochrome b gene.
