A high capacity,long-life affordable cost,foot operated diaphragm pump that is robust through three million pump cycles and capable of servicing 2 ha of crop (significantly more using trickle irrigation) with a lift of up to 20 m is described.The pump is ideal for small farmers as well as research / plant breeding in developing and transitional economies.If used in high grade seed multiplication it has the potential to provide stability and security for seed supply into the seed chain,whether operating at an informal community level or in the formal seed sector.These long-life pump technologies generate affordable new opportunities for improving household,school and village water supply significantly.
