In this study, the hydration of a shrinkage-compensating cement for use in concrete pavements is tested via experiments and a three-dimensional computer model CEMHYD3D. The cement is tested in regard to its influence on the length change and compressive strength of mortar samples. Chemical shrinkage of cement pastes containing various amounts of the shrinkage-compensating admixture is also tested. The relative amount of ettringite in cement pastes containing various amount of this admixture is analyzed with XRD. A 3-D computer model CEMHYD3D is used to simulate the hydration process of cement paste with MSA and to predict some properties of the paste. Practical suggestions for industrial applications are presented based on the experimental results.
