A Study on Using Conical Bottom Tamper for Dynamic Compaction in Platy Sand

The conventional tampers used in dynamic compaction (DC) all have arnflat bottom that may not be the most efficient shape for delivering therncompaction energy. A laboratory test program is carried out to comparernthe efficiency of DC between a flat bottom tamper and a conical bottomrntamper. The soil sample is granular and their scanning electronrnmicroscope photographs reveal a platy shape of the soil particles. Thernsoil specimens are prepared by the method of pluviation. It is learnedrnfrom this study that the conical bottom tamper is more efficient than thernflat bottom tamper for soil improvement.
