A Study on Using Conical Bottom Tamper for Dynamic Compaction in Platy Sand

The conventional tampers used in dynamic compaction (DC) all have a flat bottom that may not be the most efficient shape for delivering the compaction energy. A laboratory test program is carried out to compare the efficiency of DC between a flat bottom tamper and a conical bottom tamper. The soil sample is granular and their scanning electron microscope photographs reveal a platy shape of the soil particles. The soil specimens are prepared by the method of pluviation. It is learned from this study that the conical bottom tamper is more efficient than the flat bottom tamper for soil improvement.
