摘要

This paper presents the outcome of the REDD-FLAMErnproject: a system capable of monitoring tropical andrnsub-tropical forests using high-resolution, cloudpenetratingrnradar data (and optical imagery), acquiredrnby Earth Observation satellites. By focussing on earlyrndetection of logging activities, the system provides thernmeans to quickly identify the first signs of deforestationrnand thus contribute to the objectives of the UN-REDDrn(Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and ForestrnDegradation) Programme by facilitating timelyrnintervention and thus reducing unauthorised tree loss inrnthe context of carbon accounting.rnThe main results of the project are presented. REDDFLAMErnhas proven to be a reliable means ofrnidentifying small-scale deforestation events, rncomplementing MRV actions with a continuouslyrnproactive tool for reducing carbon emissions. Thernsystem is ready to exploit Sentinel data as soon as theyrnbecome available.
