The role of Eurasian boreal ecosystems is essential inrnglobal climate regulation. On the one hand, northernrnforests are pools of terrestrial carbon and constitute arnglobal sink of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO_2), thusrncontributing to the attenuation of greenhouse effects. Onrnthe other hand, boreal lakes and wetlands store largernamounts of carbon, partially released as methane (CH_4)rnand other trace gases to the atmosphere during springrnand summer. Properly monitoring and characterizingrnkey land surface-atmosphere interactions occurring inrnboreal Eurasia is nowadays of paramount importance,rnespecially in the light of dramatic changes experiencedrnby the region in the last few years (e.g., illegal logging,rnincreased number of wildfires, melting permafrost, etc.).rnIn this context, the European Space Agency (ESA) inrncollaboration with iLEAPS (Integrated Land Ecosystem-rnAtmosphere Processes Study) has launchedrnALANIS, a multi-mission Atmosphere-LANd InteractionrnStudy over boreal Eurasia.
