OPEN MODULAR AVIONICS ARCHITECTURE FOR SPACE APPLICATIONS AND ITS COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURE

Computer systems for space applications are often specific solutions for only one particular mission. The reusability of such systems is very limited and thus, the development process starts at the beginning for each new mission. This results for each spacecraft in an enormous development effort for hardware and software with high costs and long project lead times. In the paper we present the concepts of the Open Modular Avionics Architecture for Space Applications (OMAC4S), a reference architecture which can help to limit the costs and the duration of the software and hardware development of spacecraft projects. The focus is on the description of the high-performance and fault tolerant communication infrastructure based on a powerful and space qualified network router board.
