STAR – SDR SPACE TRANSPONDER

STAR (SDR Space Transponder) project is an INTECSrnR&D activity aiming to design and develop a spacerntransponder entirely based on SDR (Software DefinedrnRadio) technologies and conceived for small satellites,rnmainly in EO (Earth Observation) missions and in LEO.rnThe paper introduces the scenario, objectives andrndevelopment philosophy behind STAR, then gives anrnoverview of the main system characteristics andrnrequirements. A particular attention is dedicated to thoserninnovative characteristics (flexibility, reconfigurability,rnuse of COTS components, modularity) driving therncritical elements solutions, then the architecturalrnprinciples are reported in order to present the resultingrndesign of STAR.
