摘要

The paper deals with the Payload Data Handling System(PDHS)of the future GAIA satellite.PDHS requirements are reported,functions and architecture are presented,and hardware implementation aspects are discussed.A unique feature of GAIA PDHS is the requirement of on-board processing in real time:video data received from the instruments are subjected to complex,astronomical image processing algorithms,with the aim of programming the instrument electronics for optimized,subsequent read-out of science data.This leads to a high performance requirement of the PDHS Video Processing Units. Another significant feature of the GAIA payload are the large number of CCD in the focal planes and correspondingly,a large number of instrument interfaces.Science data coming from all these interfaces first need to be buffered,are later extracted,compressed,and then redeposited in the buffer,waiting for output to telemetry.These data handling requirements give rise to a versatile utilisation of the proposed buffering device,a solid state mass memory.
