Environmental concerns and regulations are drivign forces to develop new coatigns and/or surface modification techniques that are environmentally benign. This is especially evident in the need to replace chrome and cadmium coatings. Ion beam alloying techniques such as ion implantation and ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) overcome many of the problems associated with presently used surface treatments, are environmentally friendly, provide a means to produce new and unique materials, and can be used to tailor metal surfaces without affecting the bulk properties of the material. These attributes have resulted in considerable interest in using the ion beam techniques to improve the corrosion and/or wear resistance of metals~1-32. One drawback of the ion beam techniques has been the initial capital costs. However, recent environmental concerns and increasing costs of waste disposal make these environmentally benign techniques attractive.
