Assuring the Effectiveness of Silt Fences and Other Sediment Barriers

Most erosion and sediment control efforts focus on controlling the release of sediment already suspended in runoff by the use of filter barriers such as silt fences, turbidity curtains, and check dams or by usign sediment traps and basins. While sediment traps and basins are long-term structures primarily designed to collect and hold runoff, silt fences, turbidity curtains, and check dams are intended to be temporary permeable filters. In these filter barrier systems geotextile "filter fabrics' have been and continue to be primary system components. Silt fence has become the most widely used sediment control device.
