BENEFITS OF USAGE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT LAMPS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: CASE STUDY BANGLADESH

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) withrnintegral ballasts have been available in thernmarkets of developed countries for about 3rndecades. On the other hand, they have beenrnintroduced to the markets of develop-pingrncountries recently and they are not yetrnwidely used. They consume about 75-80 %rnless energy than their incandes-centrnequivalents providing the same level ofrnservices. At the moment, LED based lightingrntechnology is an emerging technology andrnthey show very promising energy efficiencyrnover the existing technology. This articlerndiscusses the benefits that are possible tornachieve by replacing incandescent lampsrnwith CFLs. Bangladesh has been taken asrnan example to discuss the possibilities ofrnachieving benefits by the end-users as wellrnas the utility and the government. Thus,rneconomical and social development benefitsrnby replacing incandescent lamps with CFLsrnhave been discussed. The possibility andrnscope of using LED lamps is also discussed.
