With the growing global popularity of 802.11-based wireless networks, VoWLAN (Voice over WLAN) has becoming one of the most promising emerging applications. Given the explosive growth in its usage, enhancing capacity of 802.11- based wireless networks is an important problem. In this paper, we proposed a "Waiting-time Dependent Backoff (WDB)" algorithm for voice capacity improvement. By reducing latency as well as jitter and improving equity, voice capacity can be raised. Through detailed and extensive simulations, we show that the performance of the overall VoIP (Voice over IP) capacity can be improved both with and without background traffic.
