Most people enjoy the enriched depth perception in 3D displays, but some may also complaint about increased feelings of discomfort when watching such displays. The exact reasons for these feelings of discomfort are not fully understood yet. A mismatch between accommodation and vergence is often indicated as one of the reasons, but for moderate screen disparity values discomfort due to an accommodation-vergence conflict should be limited, especially at large viewing distances. Additional possible reasons for visual discomfort, however, may be: (1) fast changes in the amount of depth in the scene, (2) 3D related artifacts in recording or displaying the content, and (3) inconsistencies in depth due to limitations of the display or as a consequence of the position of the viewer. Most viewers are able to comfortably cope with the challenging visual stimuli on a 3D display, but there is a limited group of people with moderate binocular vision, for which these challenging visual stimuli may result in visual discomfort.
