This is the second of two papers that describe therndevelopment of simulation methods for optimallyrncontrolled central plant equipment in IBLASTrn(Integrated Building Loads Analysis and SystemrnThermodynamics). In Part II, the development andrnimplementation of methods for simulating optimallyrncontrolled cold thermal storage in a building energyrnanalysis program are described.rnThe goal of optimising a thermal storage system is tornminimise the daily energy cost of operating thernsystem. This means that the amount of ice builtrnduring off-peak operation, the quantity of ice used tornprovide cooling, and the time of use andrnreplenishment must be determined. In this research,rnthe optimal control problem was solved byrndiscretising the allowable chiller part load fractions,rnonly allowing a few to be considered at each timernstep. As a result, an approximate optimal solutionrncould be found with a small number of search paths.
