Synthesis and Properties of Multi-Functional Epoxy Resins Containing Naphthalene Units

In recent years, there has been substantial development of high performance epoxyrnresins which offer improvements in both processing and physical properties forrnvarious composites. We have studied tetra-functional epoxy resins based onrnnaphthalene units. Epoxy resins with dimeric naphthols, as reported previously,rnshowed high Tg values, but had poor solubility in conventional solvents (ethyl methylrnketone etc.) due to its symmetrical structure [1].rnHerein we report two types of new multi-functional epoxy resin based on thernnovel condensation of naphthols and formaldehyde. These new multi-functional epoxyrnresins were synthesized by a unique condensation of various naphthols andrnformaldehyde, followed by epoxidation with epichlorohydrin. The structure of thesernsynthesized resins was characterized by mass spectrometry (MS) and gel permeationrnchromatography (GPC). Naphthol calixarene, one type of new multi-functional epoxyrnresin, had poor solubility in conventional solvents. On the other hand, naphthalenernoligomer containing spiro-cyclic ring, another type, had good solubility. This epoxyrncured resin showed Tg of 356 ℃, which is the highest Tg for epoxy resins reported sornfar. This epoxy resin has been applied to various applications which required high Tg.
