Noise reduction has been applied to electronic signals since the beginning of such measurements. Early noise reduction (aka smoothing) consisted of analog electronic filtering. The use of digital signal processing has followed the progress of computer capability. Early noise reduction consisted of simple averaging techniques. Chromatographic data processing was done "on the fly" which together with limited computer processing capability reduced the options for noise reduction. Some of today's process gas chromatographs (PGC) use post run calculations which together with the improved computer capability of today's PGC allows more sophisticated noise reduction techniques.
