Traffic shaping is expected to be a practical solution to alleviating the adverse influence of self-similar in optical packet-switched networks. The paper aims to fully explore the effect of a hybrid optical packet assembly algorithm on the self-similar traffic shaping. Our simulation study shows that optical packet assembly can perform self-similar traffic shaping by improving three key traffic characteristics of interest in network performance evaluation, including the self-similarity, the short-term autocorrelation and the marginal distribution.
