In the paper, the mechanism and inherent rule of yttrium carbonates crystallization were investigated via the PH in situ-ditermination and observation on variation in deposit volume. The conditions favourable to growth of yttria carbonate particles therefrom yeilding large yttria particles were discussed. The morphologies of the typical yttria carbonate crystalites obtained at different molar ratio of ammonium bicarbonate to yttrium chloride were characterized by scanning electronic microscope. The effects of such major conditions as precipitation temperature, aging time, molar ratio of ammonium bicarbonate to yttrium chloride on deposit volume, deposit particle size and yttria particle size were dealt with.
