Biodetoxification of steam exploded corn stover for cellulosic ethanol production

In the process of ethanol production from steamexploded corn stover (SECS), a strain of cellulosedegrading fungus FLZ10, screened by our prior work, was investigated whether it could remove the inhibitory compounds released from steam exploded pretreatment, and thereby be used for biological detoxification on S. cerevisiae. The results showed that FLZ10 can remove 75.2% formic acid, 53.6% acetic acid, 100% hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) and furfural from hydrolysates washed from SECS during 72h inoculation and 0.49 IU/ml cellulase activity was simultaneously obtained while the biological detoxification occurred. 0.45g/g of ethanol yield on glucose was obtained after 72h fermentation in the biodetoxified hydrolysate. FLZ10 can consume unfermented reducing sugars and had little competition with S. cerevisiae on glucose consumption. Stain FLZ10 was finally conducted to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process for onsite detoxification. The total ethanol productivity with biodetoxification was 34g/L, much higher than that of 8 g/L without detoxification.
