Hydraulic hybrids offer competitive fuel economy, greater performance, lower cost and longer service life than electric hybrids. To demonstrate the advantages of hydraulic hybrids, a comparison between a hydraulic hybrid and electric hybrid passenger vehicle is conducted using ADVISOR 2004. The electric hybrid used for comparison is the Toyota Prius. The hydraulic counterpart of the electric Prius - a hydraulic Prius - is built in ADVISOR. Results show that the hydraulic Prius has a fuel economy nearly as high as that of the electric Prius in both Federal Test Procedure (FTP) and Highway Fuel Economy Test (HFET) drive cycles, while its acceleration is better. Future improvements may come from new technology, such as Artemis Digital Displacement control, which will significantly improve the pump and motor efficiencies at low displacement fractions. Further improvement may also come from optimizing the control strategy for the hydraulic hybrids.
