The dynamics of a portable pneumatic battering ram are investigated via mathematical modeling and validated through experiment. The mathematical model includes mechanical, thermodynamic and fluid mechanic considerations of compressible flow. Choked and unchoked flow conditions are included in the model. An adiabatic assumption is used to model the gas expansion and Newton's 2nd law provides the basis for the mechanical model. The model predicts battering ram velocity, position, kinetic energy, momentum, and reservoir and air chamber pressures with time. Scaling parameters are used to non-dimensionalize the governing equations. The model correlates well with experimental data and can be utilized for design optimization of the battering ram.
