The overall efficiency of a hydraulic pump is the product of the hydromechanical and volumetric efficiency. Data supplied by an OEM for vane pumps were used to generate models for the hydromechanical and volumetric losses. With these models, estimates of the effect of lubricant viscosity, pressure and speed on pump efficiency were computed. The effect of fluid viscometrics at speeds ranging from 600 to 2000 rpm, pressures from 50 to 250 bar and temperatures from 0°C to 90°C were determined. The models can be used to select a fluid that maximizes the efficiency of a pump depending on operating conditions.
