Open Notebook Science: An Exploratory Study on Motivations and Perceived Challenges

摘要

The article explores the motivations of and the challenges faced by practitioners of open notebook science (ONS) through an on-line survey and a qualitative analysis. Motivations range from voluntary participation to the "need" to take part in ONS. The challenges are rooted mainly in the clash of ONS with the incumbent scientific culture. The implications for science are: identificat ion of more suitable disciplines to adopt ONS and the design of new policies and adoption of new pract ices to overcome cultural barriers that impede the full exploitation of ONS by scientists.
